Fitness

By the time that children have their own energetic pursuits and are learning sports, swimming or ballet, parents often find it's time to reclaim their own fitness. Better still, is there something you could learn or do together as a family?

Local leisure centres

Check the timetables carefully: is there a yoga class while your kids could be at gymnastics or basketball? Or what about taking turns to go swimming with the kids while one of you goes to the weights room or aerobics? Children often like to stay longer in the pool than their parents do!

Keeping kids fit

Children prefer their fitness to be fun: they'll happily race round the park three times if you are timing them with a stopwatch, but they won't walk to school in the rain. Never miss the chance to have a jog round the park yourself. To avoid upsets, remember you don't need to make everyone in the family compete, you can simply keep a record of everyone's best times and stagger the start-times. Biking is another form of exercise that is well disguised as a family outing – or even a holiday. Check www.cyclemaps.org.uk for quiet routes to take you around your local area or a region you'll be visiting. Go to our Activities Page for more ideas to keep kids fit.
